Jewelry Engraving - Nope! Sorry...

Last year (almost exactly - 4 days until my anniversary!), I got married. I bought  a tungsten carbide wedding ring from a website online, with an laser-etched celtic knot pattern on the outside surface. Now, I thought that would be a perfect application for my laser, since they do it on the ring website, why not use my own laser? I was reluctant to use my own ring as a guinea pig though, in case I might ruin it some how.

Well, as it turns out, I got the chance to test the process on a few rings since then, and I can say with authority now, "I can't do it."
The 45 watt laser that I have here is not powerful enough to make even the slightest mark on the rings I tested, try as I might. And as for engraving the inside of a ring, don't even think about doing it with a laser. There has to be a clear line of sight to the surface to be etched, and if you want to do the inside of the ring, the top will get in the way. It's not going to happen. Sorry!

The best bet, as far as I can figure it, is to order the engraving at the time of purchase. They must have a much more powerful laser than mine, or they are much more persistent or smarter somehow than I am.

Another option would be to go to an engraver that uses rotary equipment to engrave into the metal. Of course, you may be like me, and think that the "old" way to engrave the ring is not nearly as cool as doing it with a laser beam. I mean, come on! It's a frickin' LASER BEAM!

So anyway, sad to say, I won't be etching any rings anytime soon. But for all your other engraving needs, I have a laser beam here, and it's just waiting for you to feed it. I think it's pretty darn cool.
